A Comparative Analysis on the Relation between Welfare State Polices and Married Women¡¯s Economic Position within the Family

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore individual and institutional factors that affect married women s economic position within the family in comparative perspective This study examine the mechanism of the relationship between the welfare stare policies and women s economic standing, Analyses use the micro-level data from the Luxembourg Income Study(ware VI around 2004) for 16 advanced industrial countries(including Korea),The finding suggested that married women s economic position within the family was highest in Scandinavian countries, On the contrary, in Korea married women were highly dependent on husbands earnings. It conducts a multi-level regression analysis to examine the effects of employment protection regulation, the size of public sector, the expenditure for care services, unionization rate, women s representativeness in parliament, income inequality, gender wage gap while controlling for individual attributes of wives(age and education)as well as household characteristics(presence of children under 5 and under 17, spouses education). It finds that the size of the public sector, public support to the care services and union mobilization positively affect wives contribution to household income, And gender wage inequality(gap) negatively affect married women s economic position within the family.
